Sammie Gough
Sammie Gough (she/her) is an emerging artist, theatre producer and backyard gardener of Irish, English and Welsh ancestry. Growing up in the Australian bush in the midst of a multi-year drought, Sammie first learned about plants from her mother and from the kangaroos that she chased away from the 'garden'. She has lived for over 12 years on Turtle Island and continues to try to learn how to be a good visitor. She is interested in how creative work can build connections and community across plant, animal and human worlds. During the pandemic she started learning about bees and building pollinator gardens, which led to her and Laurel Green creating Yarrow Collective and a site-responsive participatory gardening installation POLLINATORS, to explore the relationship between people, plants and pollinators. It invited audiences to play a role in four different ecosystems and through doing so, reflect on the magic of pollination. POLLINATORS premiered at Theatre SKAM's SKAMpede festival 2021 on lək̓ʷəŋən territory, also known as Victoria, BC. Yarrow Collective is creating an installation as part of Pacific Opera Victoria's Voices In Nature festival in 2022 and also works with local community organisations creating seasonal activations.
Sammie is a member of The Only Animal's Artist Brigade, a group of artists that aims to bring imagination, vision and heart into the telling of the climate story in order to mobilize a society paralyzed by climate anxiety and grief.
Sammie has worked for seven years as producer at Intrepid Theatre, creators of OUTstages, UNO Fest and the Victoria Fringe Festival. She works with a collaborative team to support the work of up to 200 artists each year and engage with an audience of up to 30,000 people per year.
