Michael Martini is a Montreal-based queer theatre artist who creates work for contexts ranging from the blackbox to the gallery to the cabaret. Notably, his co-creation Ça a l’air synthétique bonjour hi, a collaboration with Burcu Emec, Roxa Hy, and Nien Tzu Weng, has appeared at festivals such as OFFTA and Summerworks, receiving various accolades along the way. The project is a participatory performance where participatory art itself is criticized, especially thinking of an audience’s unacknowledged labour and blurred lines of consent. In this tongue-in-cheek performance, audience members are paid actual money throughout the show to complete mundane tasks onstage, like doing the artists’ laundry.
