Mariel Marshall
Mariel is an interdisciplinary artist and tech entrepreneur based in Toronto, Canada. She is a core member of the Toronto/Brooklyn experimental performance collective bluemouth inc. The company’s latest work, Cafe Sarajevo had its world premiere in Singapore in 2020 and toured to The Progress Festival in February 2020.
ELEPHANT:
bluemouth inc.’s current work in progress, ELEPHANT, is a piece that prismatically looks at the world today by following an inter-generational group of women over the course of an evening at a dinner party. The piece is composed of two parts. The first is a series of short films which introduce the audience to the backstory of each of the seven characters in the piece. The second part is an in-person dinner party experience with a live-stream component. Where ELEPHANT veers from the norm of typical livestreams, however, is that it is not a theatrical event being filmed, but rather a film shoot being dramatically inhabited. Our set is a large studio where four separate cameras are installed: in the kitchen where (a real) dinner is being prepared, on the balcony in the moonlight, in a crowded living room, and in a dimly lit bedroom. All cameras are able to roam, operated centrally through an Atem mini-pro board. Action is choreographed such that the story unfolding is filmed in real time. The performers slip between their roles as performers and camera operators.
TANDEM:
Mariel founded the performing arts intelligence company StagePage in 2019 with the mission to help connect more people to arts and culture experiences. Watch for the company’s newest service TANDEM "date night made easy" coming this June 2022: tandemexperiences.com.
PAIR-CG
Mariel is also a co-organizer of the Performing Arts Information Representation Community Group at the W3C, an international group dedicated to community-sourcing the foundational infrastructure to power the next generation of AI tools and software for the arts.
